Gap Fund

The Gap Fund invests up to $400,000 annually to help University of Arkansas researchers launch start-up companies utilizing their discoveries. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis.

 

Objectives

Provide start-up support for faculty-led teams that have completed National I-Corps training.

Funding Sequence

University of Arkansas faculty, graduate students and post-doctoral researchers who are actively working toward launching a start-up company are eligible for funding following these steps:

Step 1

The team must complete a National I-Corps program and receive $50,000 from the National Science Foundation as part of that program.

Step 3

Apply to the Gap Fund to support up to $35,000 for a post doctoral fellow, graduate student or visiting scientist in commercialization.
At the end of this step, the team must submit an SBIR or STTR proposal.

Step 2

Apply to the Gap Fund to support up to $30,000 for prototype development, advancement and testing

Step 4

Apply to the Gap Fund to support up to $35,000 for the second phase of a post doctoral fellow, graduate student or visiting scientist in commercialization while awaiting news about the submitted SBIR/STTR proposal.

About National I-Corps

The National I-Corps program prepares researchers to extend their focus beyond the university laboratory to learn what it will take to achieve a commercial impact with their innovations.

U of A I-Corps Site

The University of Arkansas will host a STEAM Training in Entrepreneurial Practices (STEP) I-Corps Site in Summer 2019. Teams may find the U of A program provides a needed stepping stone to the National I-Corps program. Applications for the U of A I-Corps training are open through March 23.

Regional I-Corps Nodes & Sites

Teams may attend a regional I-Corps node or site to prepare for and receive a recommendation to the National I-Corps program.
